Alberta police watchdog investigates death of Yukon man

WHITEHORSE—A fatal shooting in Yukon will be investigated by Alberta’s police watchdog.

Yukon RCMP say the shooting happened Tuesday on a highway south of Whitehorse as officers attempted to carry out a wellness check.

A statement from police says officers had been asked to check on the well-being of a 48-year-old man.

They spotted him driving along the highway and conducted a traffic stop, but the statement says a shot was heard from inside the vehicle as the Mounties approached.

The man was found dead at the scene.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is working with the Yukon coroner and no further information is expected until the investigation concludes.
