Signs that the U.S. Federal Reserve may not put the brakes on its aggressive monetary stimulus program any time soon sent North American markets higher Tuesday. The S&P/TSX composite index climbed 129.38 points to 12,742.43, also boosted by strong gains in the energy and gold sectors. The Canadian dollar was down 0.73 of a cent from Friday’s close at 97.39 cents (U.S.). On Wall Street, both the Dow Jones industrials index and the S&P 500 again surged to record highs. The Dow closed ahead 52.30 points at 15,387.58, while the S&P was up 2.87 points at 1,669.16. The Nasdaq gained 5.69 points to 3,502.12. The increases came after St. Louis Fed president James Bullard said in a speech in Frankfurt, Germany, that the best course of action for the U.S. central bank is to continue with its $ 85-billion-a-month bond buying program, also known as quantitative easing. Investors had been worried that the Fed would begin pulling back its monetary stimulus since recent data has showed outlooks for housing and jobs in the U.S. were rosier than expected. Critics have questioned whether the recent record high closes for the Dow and S&P have been due to the relatively easy money [...]

Monday was the final performance side of this edition of Dancing with the Stars — and not a moment too soon. Everybody’s starting to get sick of Jacoby Jones’s mom jibber-jabbing with the judges, even Jacoby. Other contestants are starting to get pretty beat up. Zendaya’s pro partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, had a big ugly bandage on his noggin’ Monday night, the result of a pre-show accident. There was blood everywhere, according to host Tom Bergeron. Was Val body-checked head first into the boards by Jacoby? This dance competition is turning into the NHL playoffs. Jacoby went into the finals, for the first time ever, as the top man on the leader board. Len Goodman stopped by the rehearsal centre to offer a few toe-tapping tips. Make like you’re “kicking a peanut,” the head judge suggested. “Kicking a Peanut?” said Bergeron. “Ingo’s son is saying, ‘What did I do?’ ” (FYI eliminated celebrity Ingo Rademacher’s son is nicknamed Peanut.) Despite the advice, Jacoby had the lowest marks throughout a three-part dance finale. The first part asked the remaining four celebrities to perform a dance picked out for them by the judges. Jacoby and Karina Smirnoff did a jive and while it [...]

On one hand, the semester was winding down and summer vacation was just a few sleepless nights spent cramming for exams away. On the other hand, the end of the semester also meant it was time for a summer job. A good summer job can make for a memorable summer. However, a bad summer job can make the summer seem like it’s dragging on forever. Below is a list of jobs for you to consider this summer if you want to make some money and have fun at the same time. Server If you’re looking to make some quick cash, work at a restaurant or bar as a server, not a dishwasher. While your paychecks generally won’t be worth a whole lot, you won’t have to wait a week or two for payday because you’ll bring home cold, hard cash after every shift (hopefully). Look for establishments that have outdoor seating, as it’s likely they’ll need to hire extra help for the summer. Landscaper If you don’t mind the hot weather, you can [...]

Letters will soon be in the mail to the thousands of Canadians who, like me, have put too much into their Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) and so have to pay a penalty to the Canada Revenue Agency. These letters apply to the 2012 tax year and the penalties must be paid by the end of June or the amount owed will start accumulating interest. They’re being sent now because this is the time of year when the CRA matches the activity in your TFSA with the contribution limit they have on file. My over-contribution is for 2013, so I won’t get the letter until a year from now. For now, I’ve removed from my account the extra $ 843 I accidentally over-contributed, but wondered if I should just pay the $ 8.43 I owe now. After a closer look, I’m going to save some trouble and wait for the letter to arrive next May. The TFSA is an increasingly popular savings vehicle because the money you put inside it accumulates tax-free. Anyone over 18 can open one at any bank and you can hold stocks, mutual funds and products like GICs in the accounts. In 2013, the annual limit [...]

WASHINGTON—A Senate panel says Apple Inc. is avoiding paying billions of dollars in U.S. taxes, but the world’s most valuable company says it is complying with the laws and pays “an extraordinary amount” in taxes to the U.S. government. Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook is scheduled to testify Tuesday on Capitol Hill to explain the company’s tax strategy. The Senate investigation, results of which were disclosed Monday, found Apple employs a group of affiliate companies outside the United States to avoid paying taxes. Apple is holding overseas some $ 102 billion of its $ 145 billion in cash, and an Irish subsidiary that earned $ 22 billion in 2011 paid only $ 10 million in taxes, according to the report issued Monday by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The strategies Apple uses are legal, and many other multinational corporations use similar tax techniques to avoid paying U.S. income taxes on profits they reap overseas. But Apple uses a unique twist, the report found. The company’s tactics raise questions about loopholes in the U.S. tax code, lawmakers say. The spotlight on Apple’s tax strategy comes at a time of fevered debate in Washington over whether and how to raise revenues [...]

For decades visitors to the D-Day beaches on the northwest coast of France have looked out at the English Channel, taking in the journey made by Allied troops that marked a turning point in World War II. Canadians now have a chance to voice their opinions on that plan as a French commission holds public consultations on the project. The body has made it a point to invite people from Canada, the U.S. and Britain to weigh in and notes that even if the project goes ahead, the company building the 75 turbines will work to deal with the issues raised. The entire turbine proposal rankles at least one Canadian who fought at Juno Beach. “I personally am very much against it,” Roy E. Eddy told The Canadian Press. “I know a number of people have said they don’t agree with me, and I’m not disputing that, but I still say it’s going to be very disrespectful.” The 88-year-old, who last visited Juno Beach three years ago, vividly recalls the bloody battle. “I still have nightmares about it,” said Eddy, who served on the frigate HMCS Outremont but was assigned as the crew of a landing craft on D-Day. “I [...]

Credit: Reuters/Adrees Latif By Alexei Oreskovic and Jennifer Saba SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK | Tue May 21, 2013 12:19am EDT SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Yahoo Inc will buy blogging service Tumblr for $ 1.1 billion cash, giving the Internet pioneer a much-needed social media platform to reach a younger generation of users and breathe new life into its ailing brand. The deal, announced on Monday, is a bold bet by Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer to revitalize the company by co-opting a Web property with strong visitor traffic but little revenue. The combination of Yahoo and Tumblr creates an online powerhouse with roughly one billion users, which will draw in more advertisers and help Yahoo keep visitors on its properties for longer periods of time, Mayer told Reuters in an interview. “Tumblr in terms of users and traffic is an immediate growth story for us,” she said. Analysts say Yahoo appeared to be overpaying for a business that has never posted a profit, makes a fraction of Yahoo’s sales, and may not contribute significantly to revenue for years.
CANNES—British film production company Pinewood Shepperton will ask the British government to allow it to double the size of its main studio, the home of James Bond, after local authorities twice rejected its expansion plans. Ivan Dunleavy, chief executive of Pinewood which is Europe’s largest film studio, said it was disappointing the local council rejected its 200 million pound ($ 300 million U.S.) plan for a second time last week as it needs more capacity to meet rising demand. Dunleavy said the company has yet to make a formal announcement on any appeal. But asked by Reuters if this was likely he said: “I would have thought so.” The 15-year project would have involve building studios, stages and streetscapes at the Iver Heath site but South Buckinghamshire Council rejected the plans as “inappropriate” expansion into green belt land encircling London. Dunleavy said the next step was to go to the national government which would have happened anyway if the local authority had given the green light as higher level approval was always needed for any change to green belt status. “So that is the process we will work on and we will keep going,” Dunleavy told Reuters in an interview [...]

A recent survey of Ontario real estate agents in Ontario found that smoking in a home could lower the value of your property by up to 30 per cent. The survey was sponsored by Pfizer Canada and besides the obvious damage by staining walls and carpets, it can leave a smell that is very hard to eliminate. I remember having a client close a deal and noticed a smell of smoke when they entered the home on closing. I asked why they didn’t notice the smell when they originally toured the home and they said fans were on with electric air fresheners plugged into the walls. That apparently masked the smell that day. It makes sense that a home with a smoky smell or strong odour will be harder to sell as it will deter most buyers. Landlords are permitted to include no smoking clauses in their leases. But they can only evict a tenant who smokes if they can prove the smoking has damaged the unit or is bothering the other tenants. Here’s a case in point. In December, 2006 John Davidson rented a furnished condominium on Scollard St., in Toronto where the lease contained a no-smoking clause. The [...]

Organizations are no longer limited to using PCs or even laptops. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, are fast becoming part of the SMB workplace. With the increased availability of cloud services, business applications no longer need to be on-site to address various business needs. The variety of available technology allows SMBs to cherry-pick solutions that best fit their working environment. However, the expansion of operating systems (OSs), platforms, services, and devices also means employees are going to have a harder time managing security in the workplace. Take a look at the five things that businesses should look out for in 2013 and the years to come: Prediction 1: Multiple computing platforms and devices in the workplace will lead to multiple “working environments”. Securing these devices will be more complex and difficult than most users think. Work used to be done on one device—usually, a PC running on Windows. The advent of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, means that people can easily work from a multitude of devices, often their own. Based on a Trend Micro-sponsored Forrester study, 60% of businesses employ bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs for smartphones and 47% for tablets and laptops. Using multiple devices for work [...]

With homeowners insurance (or any insurance for that matter), you’re really paying for peace of mind – comfort in knowing that life’s curveballs won’t become insurmountable problems. However, those curveballs come in many shapes and sizes, and sometime they can exceed the limits of a standard homeowners policy. Here are nine things that a standard policy may not cover. If you’re worried about any of these issues (or live in an at-risk area) it may be worth updating your coverage. Note: Every insurance policy is different, so this list is by no means the final word. Check with your provider to confirm where your coverage stacks up before you begin making any changes. Earthquakes Earthquake insurance almost always requires a separate policy. And while only a handful of U.S. states actually face a substantial earthquake threat, the potential damage caused by quakes is usually reason enough for at-risk homeowners to seek protection. Top officials at the Pentagon have ordered service chiefs to come up with plans to combat the “crisis” of sexual assault, and indicated they may find the “game changing” solution among the proposed legislation from Capitol Hill.
You may think you’re finished with your 2012 taxes because the April 30 deadline has passed and your refund is in the bank. But the Canada Revenue Agency is just getting started. The CRA assessed 13.4 million returns between mid-February and May 9, about half of the returns it will process for 2012. The average refund is $ 1,617. If you filed online you probably got your tax return back in a few days. But what you might not know is that CRA pays out those refunds based on what you filed and may go back for a closer look. The CRA won’t say how many returns it revisits each year. Some are chosen at random, but some may be selected because the CRA needs more information. When you file electronically, as nearly 85 per cent of us now do, you don’t send your receipts — just make sure you keep them. You may get a letter from by July asking for such things as proof of charitable donations, Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions or child care expenses. “That’s not an audit. That’s a request for information. People shouldn’t fear that,” said Scotiabank tax expert Tim Cestnick, president of [...]

Saskatoon-based jazz singer Alexis Normand stumbled to find the words for the Star-Spangled Banner before the Memorial Cup game Saturday. “I’m embarrassed and deeply sorry. I wish I’d had more time to learn the American anthem,” Normand tweeted after the game between the Halifax Mooseheads and the Portland Winterhawks. Normand said she was asked the morning before the game to learn the national anthem. “I was asked (Saturday) morning and I agreed,” she said. “I’m usually a quick study and I’ve been learning songs for a long time. I had learned all the lyrics, but nerves just got the best of me and I got really nervous and it all unwound from there,” Normand said. Normand said she was confident when she first when out onto the ice, but it wasn’t until the end of the second line that things went wrong. She said she took a deep breath and despite groans from the crowd at the Credit Union Centre continued singing. The crowd would then come to her rescue by helping her finish the rest of the anthem.
CANNES, FRANCE—Joel and Ethan Coen’s new film Inside Llewyn Davis is a hit at the Cannes Film Festival, scoring critical raves in advance of Sunday’s world premiere. The Coens’ uncanny evocation of the New York City folk music scene in early 1961, just before Bob Dylan exploded it with a new sound and ideas, won nearly unanimous praise from critics following Saturday’s press preview, judging by the Twitter reaction. The wistful and wryly humorous film now leaps near the top of the field in the speculation for Palme d’Or consideration, and also possible Best Actor recognition for relative newcomer Oscar Isaac, when awards are handed out May 26. MORE FROM CANNES AT THESTAR.COM The question was, which film were the critics applauding Saturday night: the sincere homage or the cutting satire? Inside Llewyn Davis has elements of both. There’s always at least two sides to any story by the Coen Bros. The film comes on as a fictionalizedmusical biopic about the title folkie, played by Guatemalan-born American actor/musician Isaac, who is struggling for recognition in the New York City folk happening of early 1961. America has a bold new president in John F. Kennedy, and there is talk of change [...]

Credit: Reuters/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa CAIRO | Sun May 19, 2013 3:17pm EDT CAIRO (Reuters) – Egyptian police enraged by the kidnapping of seven of their colleagues by Islamist gunmen in the Sinai Peninsula blocked a commercial border crossing with Israel on Sunday to pressure the Cairo government to help free the men, security sources said. A video posted online on Sunday showed seven blindfolded men, who said they were the hostages, begging President Mohamed Mursi to free political detainees in Sinai in exchange for their own release. Mursi said “all options are open” to free the hostages. “We will not succumb to any blackmail,” he wrote on Twitter. Gunmen demanding the release of jailed Islamist militants seized the policemen and soldiers on the road between the Sinai towns of el-Arish and Rafah on Thursday. The video could not be independently verified, but state newspaper Al-Ahram said security services were looking into the authenticity of the video. Police have been blocking another border post, the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip, since Friday [...]

Company blogs were once seen as a niche communication vehicle for those wanting to create more authentic messages from their leadership. More recently blogs have become a vehicle for showcasing thought leadership and generating engagement at all levels. Whatever the reason a company might blog, one thing is certain – having a company blog is of increasing importance, whatever your business. Why, you ask? Because every business relies on clients or customers in order to succeed. And the way in which those potential clients or customers discover that you exist has evolved. We frequently hear about Google changing their algorithm, and with that comes changes to how websites get in front of the eyes that matter. Right now, sites get there because they have unique, high quality content – and lots of it. This means companies that previously relied on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) without content development really need to reconsider how they’re approaching SEO today. Blogging is the creation of content. It attracts traffic to your site. The more blog posts a site has, the more opportunities it has to rank in the search results. Your goal is to get prospects to your website and to give them the [...]

Not only does it take patience, time and diligence, but also a clear understanding of why we get ourselves into debt in the first place. Was it that our wants were greater than our means? Was it thinking we could pay down our debt, only to realize after our bills, we had nothing left over? Determining how fast we can and should eliminate debt starts with a few simple steps. Write it down. Get a visual handle on where you are with your mortgage, home equity, auto, medical, student loan and credit card debt. List on each line the lender, balance, current interest rate, rate change date, final interest rate, minimum payment, monthly payment and due date. You can’t fix it until you face it.
A credit card is a secure and convenient way to pay for things from restaurants and airline tickets to groceries and gas. A rewards credit card claims to offer even more benefits – for everyday spending you can get either cash back or credit towards travel rewards including hotels, cars and flights. But a rewards credit card isn’t the best fit for everyone. It’s tempting to spend a lot just to earn more points, and when spending gets out of control you’ll pay a hefty interest charge at the end of the month. You might also find the rewards are unreachable unless you spend a significant amount on your card. Here four reasons why you shouldn’t get a rewards card: 1. You carry a balance : The top rewards cards charge 19.99 per cent interest, or more, so if you carry a monthly balance it gets expensive. Some American Express rewards cards, like the AeroplanPlus Gold card, charge 30 per cent. You can get a better rate with a low interest, fixed rate card. Two good options are TD’s Emerald Visa (9.75 per cent) and MBNA’s TrueLine MasterCard (9.99 per cent). While you won’t earn any rewards, but the interest [...]

Russian sailors are seen aboard the Admiral Panteleyev Russian war ship moored at the Cypriot port of Limassol on May 17, 2013. The U.S. hopes Russia will draw down its historic support for the Assad regime. Russia’s decision to supply the Syrian regime with the advanced missiles poses more than simply a military threat, the top U.S. military officer said Friday. “It’s at the very least an unfortunate decision that will embolden the regime and prolong the suffering,” says Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “It’s ill-timed and very unfortunate.” [RELATED: Russia Complicates Possible Peace in Syria With New Arms Deal] The Syrian regime under President Bashar al-Assad will receive P-800 Oniks “Yakhont” anti-ship missiles with advanced radar capabilities. This comes at a time when the U.S. hopes Russia will draw down its historic support for the Assad regime, and back Western efforts to bring both sides of the two-year-old civil war to the negotiating table. “What I’m really worried about is Assad will decide that since he’s got these systems, he’s somehow safer, and more prone to miscalculation,” Dempsey told reporters at a briefing on Friday with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Now, there’s a different type of currency-related risk that should be top of mind. That is, the very real risk of short-changing yourself as an investor if you hold only Canadian-dollar assets. A warning of what could happen was issued earlier this month, when the economics department of Toronto-Dominion Bank forecast a sharp decline for our dollar. Citing sluggish domestic economic growth, slumping commodity prices and a strengthening U.S. economy, the TD economists said the loonie could drop to as low as 90 cents (U.S.) in early 2014. This forecast is really nothing out of the ordinary. Historically, our dollar has usually traded at a significant discount to the U.S. greenback. At eight cents lower than it is now, the loonie would be fairly close to its historical average. The Canada-U.S. exchange rate has fluctuated widely over time, with both of its extremes being reached within the past 12 years. Back in January 2002, our dollar bottomed out at 61.8 cents (U.S.). From there, it then began its flight to [...]

HALIFAX—A small New Brunswick community was mourning the loss of a young fisherman Saturday as search efforts continued for two other crew members who were aboard a vessel that went aground off the province’s northeast coast. Military efforts to find the two missing crew members were called off around 3:45 p.m., about 10 hours after the boat issued a distress call after heading out to sea off Tabusintac, N.B. Mike Bonin, spokesman for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, said two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a Cormorant helicopter from Greenwood, N.S., had done all they could to locate the two remaining crew members. “Despite our best efforts, an exhaustive search and after repeating the search pattern area several time, unfortunately there was nothing more that we could do to find these people,” said Bonin from Halifax on Saturday. Bonin said the matter had been turned over to the RCMP. A few hours earlier around 1:15 p.m., one fisherman, a 23-year-old man from nearby Tracadie-Sheila, was found dead near where the boat hit a sandbar in rough seas and began taking on water. Mounties, local fishermen and residents were combing the shoreline until darkness feel for any sign of [...]

A slew of politicos and celebrities have been asked by their alma maters to come dole out advice to the class of 2013 in the coming weeks. [CHECK OUT: Google Map of the 2013 College Commencement Speakers] Others aren’t alumni, but the choices make sense, such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who spoke to a bunch of tech geeks at the University of California-Berkeley this week, or Kerry Washington, of Washington-based political thriller “Scandal” fame, who will speak at George Washington University this weekend. But some of the other picks have left us scratching our heads. Five of the odder pairings of commencement speakers and universities: 1. Ed Helms, Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., June 6. We’re not sure what advice the comedic actor from “The Hangover” will have for this tiny liberal arts college, except maybe this rant, which comes from an episode of “The Office” as his character Andy Bernard: “When I was in college I used to get wicked hammered.
In this excerpt from Essential Tax Facts by Winnipeg author Evelyn Jacks, she offers these six essential tax facts. Have a tax-efficient plan: People who become wealthy follow a consistent, purposeful process for thinking about their earning and savings. Cut withholding taxes: Employees should complete the TD1 Personal Tax Credit Return and its sister, Form T1213 Request to reduce tax deductions at source, to reduce withholding taxes or instalments to pay just right amount of tax all year long. Earn tax-free benefits: These include: Premiums paid by your employer to private health care plans. Premiums paid under provincial hospitalization and medical care insurance plans are taxable. If you paid all of the premiums to a wage loss replacement plan, then periodic payments (or a lump sum paid in lieu of periodic payments) from the plan are tax-free and should not be reported on an information slip. Employees who use their company car less than 50 per cent for business should discuss the reduction of standby charges with their payroll department. Employees who are required by their employers to move, can negotiate a reimbursement of up to $ 15,000 on a tax free basis, to cover losses on the sale of [...]

Mintlife Learn about Mint.com or Sign Up | Log in Categories May 16, 2013 / By Credit.com If insanity is defined as repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result, the student loan interest rate throwdown that’s about to be reprised in Washington, D.C., warrants an intervention. You may recall that at this time in 2012, Congress was in a lather over the subsidized student loan interest rates that the feds make available to financially needy students. The deficit hawks argued the program costs taxpayers some $ 6 billion annually. So as part of the deal that was cobbled together at the 11th hour to prevent the rates from doubling, those billions were extracted, in part, from the same consumer-learners who the program was intended to assist in the first place — by eliminating the six-month interest-free grace period after students graduate until their first loan payment is due. As it turned out, there were 33 billion reasons (the estimated dollar amount the Dept. of Education expects to earn from student loans in the 2013 fiscal year) why this was a false contention, as all hell broke loose once a Congressional Budget Office memorandum revealed how profitable the program actually is.
The Toronto Stock Exchange surged ahead Friday, encouraged by gains from the U.S. markets, after data showed the world’s largest economy may be in recovery. “We continue to grind higher here,” said Jason Hornett, a portfolio manager with Bissett Investment Management. “People continue to be more and more optimistic here in North America and it definitely bodes well for the stock market.” The S&P/TSX composite index jumped 105.45 points to close at 12,613.05. The advance came after Statistics Canada reported consumer prices rose last month at the slowest rate in 3-½years — coming in below expectations at 0.4 per cent. The lack of inflation helped push the Canadian dollar down 0.95 of a cent to 97.17 cents (U.S.) as the American greenback gained strength against other major currencies. In early day trading, the loonie had dropped to 96.96 cents — the lowest it’s been in more than two months. On Wall Street, signs of strength in the U.S. economy boosted the Dow Jones industrials index by 121.18 points to 15,354.40 while the S&P 500 jumped 15.65 points to 1,666.12. The current Internal Revenue Service controversy is rife with outrage, indignance, ignorance and inappropriateness. But there’s also a complex set of circumstances that led to the IRS targeting conservative political groups seeking 501(c)(4) a tax-exempt status.
Notwithstanding his defiant assertions to the contrary, Mike Duffy will almost certainly never set foot in the Conservative caucus room again. But it will take more than his departure to clear the air. The former journalist is still drawing a Senate salary but his days as a political insider are over. The same cannot be said of his or the government’s troubles. Duffy leaves behind a trail of debris that will not be cleared away just by a more sweeping examination of his public spending. Aside from Duffy’s own travails with accountability, the latest developments have exposed a systemic malaise that pervades the current government from bottom to top. That starts with the misplaced sense of caucus solidarity that saw Conservative MPs close ranks around Duffy for so long. Early on in the affair the embattled senator was reportedly treated to such a hero’s welcome by some of his caucus colleagues that it convinced him to dig in his heels and continue to portray himself as the victim of a media smear campaign. Many of Duffy’s fellow Conservatives were more inclined to put themselves in his shoes than in those of the voters they represent. That herd reaction speaks to [...]

Both closed at record highs. The Nasdaq climbed 33.73 points to 3,498.97. The U.S. Conference Board said its index of leading [...]

10. BREAKFAST AT YOUR PLACE This mischievous Paris band makes the languid Gorillaz hit sound as though it’s never had even a passing acquaintance with reggae; makes it sound, in fact, like it’s never been exposed to sunlight. Imagine an outtake from The Triplets of Belleville soundtrack, and you’ll find yourself in the right ballpark. (bit.ly/14ilOb9 ) The first time around, this London band approximated an Echo and the Bunnymen tribute act (http://bit.ly/dztu5c ). For album No. 2, they’ve morphed into something more diverting: a satisfyingly convincing dream-pop throwback, but one without a specific antecedent. The switch seems to have loosened them up. “Shy” may occasionally betray its influences, but it has so thoroughly absorbed them that they feel like a constituent part rather than the entire goal. (From Good Together, out June 3, http://vevo.ly/12OEdtq ) “When the Drugs Kick In” The kickoff track on the first studio album in 23 years from this Americana-before-it-was-called-that outfit sounds less like the snotty punk of their “How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?” heyday (http://bit.ly/19oVMDQ ) and more like a belligerent cousin to “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied”-era Steve Earle (http://bit.ly/AnLE0w ). A bar-band anthem in the making. (From Elvis [...]

Robert and Marilyn Crawley asked TD Canada Trust for an increase in their $ 201,000 home equity line of credit in 2007. The credit application was approved, along with extra insurance coverage they say was not explained to them. “When we went to the branch that day, we were going to sign the paperwork for the increase in our line of credit. At no time did we talk to anyone about adding this insurance,” Robert says. The Crawleys already had life insurance on their line of credit. They didn’t expect to pay for critical illness insurance, as well. “If they had used the plural form ‘insurances,’ we would have noticed and questioned it right away,” he says. They say they learned about the critical illness insurance only in 2011, when TD started showing the payments as an overdraft on their line of credit (since they had already reached their limit). When they contacted me, the couple asked for help in stopping the bank’s collection calls and reversing an $ 11,000 overdraft they felt they didn’t owe. They had already gone to Sid Nightingale, TD Insurance ombudsman, who said their documents showed they had applied for the insurance. “It was not [...]

After more than a week of relentless criticism, Mike Jeffries, chief executive at U.S. clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, finally responded to criticisms that he only wants to sell clothes to skinny, attractive people. “A&F is an aspirational brand that, like most specialty apparel brands, targets its marketing at a particular segment of customers,” he said in a statement posted on the company’s Facebook page Wednesday. “However, we care about the broader communities in which we operate and are strongly committed to diversity and inclusion.” Those comments are unlikely to stem the vitriol that spawned a viral video urging people to donate Abercrombie apparel to homeless people, thus giving the elite apparel a “brand readjustment.” “#FitchTheHomeless” has racked up nearly five million YouTube views since Monday. Additionally, change.org has amassed more than 22,000 signatures on a petition urging Jeffries to “Stop telling teens they aren’t beautiful; make clothes for teens of all sizes!” The backlash began with a May 3 Business Insider story that berated the company for not stocking XL or XXL women’s sizes. The article resurrected Jeffries’ 2006 remarks to Salon: “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great [...]

MONTREAL—Alcoa will eliminate about 500 jobs by permanently closing two potlines this summer at its smelter in Baie-Comeau, Que., while also delaying construction of more efficient facilities at the smelter for three years. The company said Thursday that the job cuts will be made through retirements and attrition at the smelter, which currently has about 1,400 employees. One of the potlines had been expected to be shut down later this year and the second in 2015. Instead, they will both be closed by August. The closure will leave the smelter with two operating potlines — the long rows of high-voltage reduction pots where aluminum is smelted. The aluminum giant said the decision will remove 105,000 tonnes of annual capacity, leaving the facility with the capability of producing 282,000 tonnes of metal annually. The announcement came a couple of weeks after Alcoa announced a 15-month review to cut worldwide production by 460,000 tonnes or 11 per cent of its global output. The company said the review was in response to a more than 33 per cent drop in the price of aluminum since 2011. Martin Briere, president of Alcoa Canada Primary Products, also said market conditions have forced the company to [...]

Mintlife Learn about Mint.com or Sign Up | Log in Categories May 16, 2013 / By Christopher Elliott One of the busiest days of shopping is just around the corner. And if this Memorial Day is anything like last year, chances are you’ll be heading to the mall or out of town on a trip. Either way, you’ll spend a lot of money. An IBM survey of social media sentiment found a 46 percent increase in the amount of conversations about Memorial Day travel compared to the previous year, for example. It tracked a similar sentiment when it came to spending, a finding businesses almost certainly took to heart. Since travel and consumer spending are two areas I specialize in, I thought I’d take a minute to spill the beans on how this consumer advocate spares his family and himself the indignities of Memorial Day. Make it a commerce-free holiday Pie in the sky? For some families, maybe. But making Memorial Day about cook-outs and togetherness takes the emphasis off the commerce. It’s a classic distraction maneuver, and I’m here to tell you that it works. If you can persuade your family they’re better off skipping the mall and heading [...]

OTTAWA—The Supreme Court of Canada is set to decide the fate of a Saskatchewan woman who gave birth in a Walmart bathroom stall and left the newborn in a toilet. April Halkett was found not guilty in June 2009 of abandoning the baby in the store in Prince Albert, Sask. But the Crown disagreed with the verdict and took the case to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, which upheld the findings of a trial judge. The judge said he believed Halkett’s testimony that she didn’t know she was pregnant and left the store because she thought the child was dead. Lawyers for the Saskatchewan government argued before the province’s highest court that the mother had a duty to take reasonable steps to determine if her baby — now in foster care — was alive. The Crown pointed out that the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal was, at that point, the highest court in Canada to hear the case, and its decision has created a legal question that is national in scope. The Supreme Court is scheduled to deliver its judgment Friday. TORONTO STAR | NEWS | CANADA Tweet

Credit: Reuters/Neil Hall By Tom Bergin LONDON | Thu May 16, 2013 9:30am EDT LONDON (Reuters) – Google Inc faced angry questions on Thursday from British lawmakers investigating its tax affairs and whether it had misled parliament in testimony last year. Google’s Northern Europe boss, Matt Brittin, was called back to testify to parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) after a Reuters investigation showed the company employed staff in sales roles in London, even though he had told the committee in November its British staff didn’t sell to UK clients. Brittin said the company was already being investigated by the UK tax authority in relation to transfer pricing of services traded between Google UK Ltd and other Google companies, but added that he believed Google fully complied with UK tax law. He also repeatedly denied misleading parliament in November, but added Google UK engaged in more selling activities than he had previously revealed. In November, he said “Nobody (in the UK) is selling,” and that Google Ireland was the contracting party for UK [...]

Telus is preparing to buy Mobilicity for $ 380 million, if it gets approvals from federal authorities. The announcement follows persistent rumours that the Vancouver-based telecommunications giant was in talks with Mobilicity, a small wireless carrier that has been struggling financially. The deal is subject to conditions including approval by the Competition Bureau, Industry Canada, and Mobilicity’s debtholders. Mobilicity says a deal with Telus would ensure that its 250,000 customers would continue to get service without disruption. If the deal is approved, Telus says it will keep all 150 Mobilicity employees and integrate them into its operations. Mobilicity was part of a new wave of small wireless companies launched after the last wireless spectrum auction in Canada. However, the company, which has been losing money, launched a restructuring plan last month. The companies say the entire purchase price will be used to satisfy Mobilicity’s secured and unsecured debt. “A concern for our customers and employees led us to approach Telus, which has a reputation for a strong customer focus, as evidenced by their industry leading client loyalty,” Stewart Lyons, Mobilicity president, said in a news release. “I am confident Telus will look after our employees and our customers, mitigating any [...]

When you think of jobs that move offshore to countries with lower labour costs, information technology, call centres and manufacturing come to mind. But legal work? Some Toronto law firms and in-house lawyers are also delegating high volume, repetitive work to lawyers in countries like India and the Philippines. Contract reviews, drafting standard documents, and summarizing electronic discovery transcripts are all legal projects suitable for outsourcing abroad. That’s because a lawyer in India charging $ 25 per hour is well paid by local standards but much cheaper than a Canadian lawyer who bills hundreds of dollars an hour. Six years ago Gavin Birer was vice president of legal and business affairs at the foreign exchange company Travelex when he began considering better and more efficient ways to complete routine, repetitive legal tasks. As an in-house lawyer he had limited people available to do the work and a limited budget to delegate work to external law firms. Therefore he began investigating different models for outsourcing this type of legal services. Birer discovered that India was already a major legal outsourcing destination because the country had English-speaking lawyers with common law training. “I was surprised to learn that these less expensive offshore [...]

A male labourer at a Mississauga paper box factory who was fired while undergoing sex change therapy has been awarded $ 22,000 and eight months pay by the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. The case of Maria VanderPutten and Seydaco Packing Corp. is the first of its kind in Ontario looking at how employers must deal with issues related to transgendered employees. These include harassment by other workers and facilities where they can change discreetly as their gender changes from one sex to the other. The company has not appealed the decision. VanderPutten began working for Seydaco as a general labourer in 2003. The company makes boxes for such things as prepared foods, cakes and pies found in grocery stores and indoor plant bulbs, according to its web site. VanderPutten was dismissed in 2006 because of conflicts with co-workers. These included episodes where bundles of boxes were thrown in anger, nearly hitting co-workers. VanderPutten was rehired within several months when her supervisor left the company and the owner gave her another chance. In 2008, Vanderputten started the sex reassignment process at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. She began arriving at work dressed as a woman before [...]

Credit: Reuters/Khalil Ashawi By Michelle Nichols and Louis Charbonneau UNITED NATIONS | Wed May 15, 2013 10:35pm EDT UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The U.N. General Assembly condemned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and praised the opposition on Wednesday, but a decline in support for the resolution suggested growing unease about extremism among Syria’s fractious rebels. While the non-binding text has no legal force, resolutions of the 193-nation assembly can carry significant moral and political weight. There were 107 votes in favor, 12 against and 59 abstentions – a drop in support compared with a resolution condemning the Syrian government that passed in August with 133 votes in favor, 12 against and 31 abstentions. U.N. diplomats cited concerns that Syria could be headed for “regime change” engineered by foreign governments and fears about a strengthening Islamist extremist element among the rebels as reasons for the decline in support for the resolution. Russia, a close ally of and arms supplier to Assad, strongly opposed the resolution drafted by Qatar, which Assad’s government has accused of arming the rebels seeking to oust him. But Moscow, which [...]

WASHINGTON — Apple Inc. will be the subject of a May 21 Senate hearing on U.S. companies’ offshore tax practices, said a person familiar with the inquiry. An Apple executive will testify at the hearing of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, the person said. The committee has been examining companies that use various maneuvers to reduce their tax bills, including Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, has $ 40.4 billion in earnings outside the U.S. on which it hasn’t paid U.S. taxes. If Apple brought that money back to the U.S., the company would owe $ 13.8 billion, according to public filings by the company. Apple is borrowing money to return cash to shareholders rather than repatriate offshore earnings. Gordon Trowbridge, a spokesman for Senator Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat who is chairman of the committee holding the hearing, said the witness list will be released May 17. Politico earlier reported plans for the hearing. TORONTO STAR | BUSINESS Tweet

Diddy set social media abuzz on Wednesday after posts on his verified Twitter account said, “MY BIG NEWS: So happy to announce that Im a series regular on DOWNTON ABBEY-my favorite show+i’ll be debuting a sneak peek tonight 12am PST!.” “It’s not true,” PBS spokeswoman Carrie Johnson said in an email to Reuters. It is unknown whether or not Diddy’s Twitter account @iamdiddy, followed by 8.7 million people, was hacked after the Downton Abbey logo was added as the avatar and background on the account. A representative for Diddy, 43, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Emmy-winning series Downton Abbey, about the lives of aristocratic Britons and their servants in the early 20th century, is broadcast on Britain’s ITV and on public broadcaster PBS in the United States. When you do both at the same time, the experience is super stressful, not to mention emotional and difficult on many levels. You’re potentially carrying two mortgages or trying to time the purchase with the sale. There will be a lot of sleepless nights, worrying over finances and pressure to make a decision.
OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff wrote a personal cheque to reimburse taxpayers for Sen. Mike Duffy’s improperly claimed living expenses. The prime minister’s office confirmed Wednesday that Nigel Wright, a former Bay St. financier, was behind the $ 90,172 payment Duffy made earlier this year. “The Government believes that taxpayers should not be on the hook for improper expense claims made by Senators,” said Harper spokesperson Andrew MacDougall said in a statement. “Mr. Duffy agreed to repay the expenses because it was the right thing to do. However, Mr. Duffy was unable to make a timely repayment,” MacDougall said. “Mr. Wright therefore wrote a cheque from his personal account for the full amount owing so that Mr. Duffy could repay the outstanding amount,” he said. Duffy has been at the centre of a spending controversy around his claims for living expenses of his home in suburban Ottawa. The former television journalist had claimed that a cottage in Prince Edward Island, which he represents in the Senate, was his primary residence. Duffy is one of three senators whose secondary living expenses were being examined by external auditors over allegations that they were claiming tens of thousands of dollars per [...]

OTTAWA—Incoming Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz is already getting advice on what to do once he takes charge next month — start hiking interest rates. The C.D. Howe Institute says in report authored by economist Paul Masson, a former special adviser to the central bank, that after five years of super-low interest rates, it is time to take the anemic economy off its meds. He says an extended period of low interest rates is introducing pervasive problems into the economy, such as asset bubbles in housing and risk-taking and inefficient investments. As well, low interest rates are threatening the sustainability of pension funds and contributing to record high levels of household debt. Masson notes that other countries also have near zero policy rates, but says Canada is not in the same position as the United States, Japan or Europe. The economic recession of 2008-09 didn’t hit Canada as hard, he says, and with gross domestic product near the economy’s capacity, the current one-per-cent policy rate no longer is justified. Raising rates may increase the value of the Canadian currency and set back exports, Masson concedes, but adds that with the U.S. economy in recovery mode and the dollar already [...]

Loblaw Companies Inc. is being praised for signing onto an international health and safety agreement aimed at preventing another tragedy like the one in Bangladesh that claimed 1,127 lives. “I think they have really stepped up to the plate,” said Kevin Thomas, director of advocacy for the Toronto-based Maquila Solidarity Network (MSN). “This breaks the idea that this is a European accord.” Loblaw Cos. owns the Joe Fresh brand of clothing, some of which was being manufactured in the Rana Plaza building that collapsed April 24. Workers had been told by their local managers to return to work after authorities had ordered the building evacuated due to visible structural problems. The rescue mission unfolded over two weeks, shining light on how apparel retailers are able to sell t-shirts for $ 5 each and less – fast fashion relies to a large extent on low wages in developing countries like Bangladesh. Other signatories to the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh include the Swedish based H&M; the U.S. based PVH, owners of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands; Benetton, based in Italy; Primark, headquartered in Ireland; Inditex (owner of the Zara brand) in Spain; C&A, based in Belgium, and [...]

Paying off the mortgage is a family project for the Sharanewych clan of Etobicoke. Their goal is to ditch the debt in 14 years, not 25, by paying an extra $ 2,000 every month. “To find that money has been the biggest challenge,” Christine Sharanewych says of the lifestyle changes they’ve made for the sake of their megabucks mission. The boys, Adam, 16, and Christopher, 17, learned to cook, got summer jobs at a golf course and gave up hockey to save $ 10,000 a year. The family has also curtailed luxury vacations, shopping trips and entertainment. “We don’t eat out anymore. We learned the crockpot is our best friend,” says Christine. She and her husband Roman, both professionals in their 40s, are an example of homeowners who use frugal and resourceful ways to liberate themselves from their biggest loan in life. By cutting repayment time almost in half, they’ll save about $ 55,000 in interest. Christine explains they took on a “big mortgage” when they bought more house than they really needed so their sons could attend school in a preferred neighbourhood. The family took on the accelerated repayment challenge in 2010 when they appeared on “Burn My Mortgage,” [...]

Ron Mock will take over as president and chief executive officer of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan when Jim Leech retires at the end of the year, OTPP said Tuesday. Mock is currently senior vice-president of fixed income and alternative investments at the fund, which manages around $ 129.5 billion in assets. He said in an interview that he looks forward to working closely with Leech through the transition period. “[Jim] is a very successful leader and he’s had an unbelievable term here. He has led the organization on so many different fronts and I will have the luxury of being beside him for the next seven months while we transition through this,” Mock said. “Our focus has been and will be on our pension plan members.” Mock joined Teachers’, as the pension plan is known, in 2001 as director of alternative investments. “Ron brings the ideal combination of experience, knowledge and leadership acumen to the CEO role at this high performance organization,” Eileen Mercier, chair of the pension plan said in a release. “We have every confidence that he will lead the organization to new levels of success as CEO, as Jim has and Claude Lamoureux did before him.” [...]

Ontario’s health minister says the province is spending $ 25 million to replace a certain type of mammography screening device across the province after research published today showed the device is less effective than other types. The technology being replaced, called “computed radiography,” is currently used for about 20 per cent of mammograms in Ontario. The study published in the journal Radiology shows that other technology — direct radiography mammograms and screen-film mammograms — are better at detecting breast cancer. “Ontario is committed to being a world leader in cancer care, which is why our government is making changes based on this new information and the advice of our experts. With the support of health care providers, Ontario will phase out (computed radiography) devices across Ontario over the coming months,” said Health Minister Deb Matthews in a statement.
The Associated Press is accusing Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department of “serious interference with AP’s constitutional rights.” The Associated Press revealed Monday that the Justice Department seized phone records for bureaus in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn. Ronald Machen, the U.S. attorney in Washington, notified the AP about the seizure in a Friday letter, but did not explain why the call records were taken. The records, from April and May 2012, cover 20 phone lines that are used by around 100 journalists, according to the AP. The AP story revealing the seizure speculates that it was connected to a criminal investigation into a story about a foiled terrorist plot planned for May 2, 2012, the anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death. “The plot was significant,” the AP’s article explains, “because the White House had told the public it had ‘no credible information that terrorist organizations, including al-Qaida, are plotting attacks in the U.S. to coincide with the (May 2) anniversary of bin Laden’s death.’” [READ: Your Snapchat 'Sexts' Aren't Actually Deleted] On Monday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney referred reporters asking about the seizure to the Justice Department, according to a press pool report sent at [...]

Electric car and fears of capped exports by Chinese mines have brought new life into the “biggest little town” of Kearney, Ontario. On Monday, Ontario Graphite Inc. announced it has final approval to re-commission the Kearney graphite mine, on the western edge of Algonquin Park, which could be up and running by November. “Everyone’s excited about the growth of the battery industry and specifically, electric vehicles,” said Simon Moores, graphite industry expert and manager at Industrial Minerals Data. “That’s what’s driving the renewed interest in the last two years.” Roughly 80 jobs — 60 to 65 of which the company says will be sourced locally — will process one million tonnes of ore into 20,000 tonnes of high-grade, large flake graphite. It would make it the largest graphite mine in North America, producing more graphite than the only other Canadian mines, in B.C. and Quebec, combined. Interest in the mine wasn’t renewed until prices jumped in 2010. Privately-owned Ontario Graphite Inc. applied to re-commission the mine that December, and got the final approval from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment last week. Canada’s graphite mining industry had one foot in the grave when China flooded the market in the early [...]

NEW YORK—This week, the streets of midtown Manhattan are again swarming with TV executives trying to woo ad buyers to their upcoming fall lineups with splashy presentations, star-packed cocktail parties and plentiful swag. But there’s an air of urgency for the suits at the legacy networks: CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox. They’ve been rocked by an ominous first: a basic cable program, AMC’s zombie apocalypse drama The Walking Dead, outperformed every scripted show on television this season in the advertiser-coveted 18- to 49-year-old demographic. And zombies are the least of it. Competition is closing in from every corner and on every device. DVRs are frustrating advertisers by allowing viewers to skip ads. Netflix, Amazon and a host of online web services are producing original fare. Aereo, mogul Barry Diller’s new service that allows broadcast signals to be watched on hand-held devices, poses another threat that the networks are trying to extinguish with litigation. In this environment, TV executives at the annual upfronts that started Monday must pitch their new shows after a season most notable for its failure to produce a single hit. Not surprisingly, most analysts expect tepid advance sales for prime-time commercials, with possibly zero growth over last [...]

When BlackBerry kicks off Live 2013 this week, the company finds itself in better shape than at the start of last year’s gathering. The annual event — a hands-on developer’s forum, plus a series of concerts and parties — starts Tuesday in Orlando, Fla., amidst anticipation the company may offer new insight into future product plans. At the time of last year’s event, then called Blackberry World, some analysts were speculating about a break-up of the company, then known as Research In Motion, after another delay in the BB10 launch. But while market sentiment has improved, with the phones now being rolled out to generally positive reviews and shares rallying Monday on enthusiasm over the annual showcase conference, questions still swirl around BlackBerry. Thorsten Heins, chief executive officer of the Waterloo, Ont.-based mobile device maker, could address some of the uncertainty by unveiling a mid-tier version of its next-generation BB10 phone during his keynote speech Tuesday morning. Many see capturing the growing market for mid-priced phones as crucial to building shipment volumes, with Apple possibly gearing up to give new attention to the segment. In an interview earlier this year, Heins said the company plans to unveil a variety of [...]

If I had to single out an investor’s number one dilemma it would be the “sell” decision. The decision to “buy” is much less complicated. All you need is some cash along with a compelling story and you’re in the game. Once you’re in the game you have many scenarios to cope with. What to do if the price goes down? What to do if the price goes up? What to do if the price remains unchanged for months? All these questions are related to admitting a mistake in the event of a falling price, or not being too greedy in the event of a rising price. If the price remains unchanged for months should we move on or wait for the market to discover the value we saw during our buy decision? Unfortunately, one popular solution being embraced by investors is the stop loss order. With a stop-loss order, if a stock you own declines to a predetermined price, the stop–loss order converts into a market order. This means your broker will sell the shares at the best available price. On the surface this sell strategy appears to be a logical way to contain risk because the sell is [...]

Peter Worthington was a newspaperman. He was a newspaperman during print’s golden age. And newspapers let him live, as H.L. Mencken aptly put it, the life of kings. Worthington, who died at 86, was also a husband, father, executive, millionaire, political candidate, soldier and son of a general. He was a tough right-winger with no taste for subtlety who kept punching in print, and in the cyberworld now eclipsing it, until very near his last breath. It probably places Worthington on the political spectrum to say that, in his columning heyday, he esteemed Ronald Reagan, deplored all things Liberal, favoured capital punishment, disdained gays, and despised any whiff of the Red Menace of communism. Still, to meet him in person was for Worthington-haters to be sorely disappointed. As with many newspapermen, he was soft-spoken, almost shy, far fiercer on the page than face to face. Like many of life’s most pleasant events, Worthington’s career was unplanned. “I never started out to be a journalist,” he said in his 1984 autobiography. “And was still not quite sure how it happened.” Peter John Worthington was born in an army camp in Winnipeg’s Fort Osborne Barracks in 1927. The three great villains of [...]

Most people use a real estate professional when buying or selling a home. It is important to understand everything about the services that they provide, before you sign or agree to anything. Here are five important things to know: Commissions are negotiable: Some agents may charge a percentage of the sale price, others may charge a flat fee. Agents will offer different services, depending on the commission, so ask questions about how your home will be marketed, whether in the newspaper, through flyers, online, or all three. Do not be fooled by the offer of a free valuation of your home in exchange for signing with an agent. Most agents will do this for free. Agreements are for 6 months: When you sign a standard six-month agreement with an agent, you agree to pay a commission if you purchase a home during the period covered by the contract. That commission must be paid whether or not the agent was the one who introduced you to the home. You are also obligated to pay if you walk into a builder’s office and buy a new home by yourself during the same period. If you do not wish to make a commitment [...]

Many people do — they’re anxious to get that mortgage paid down as quick as they can. But especially with interest rates this low, that might not be the best place to put that next dollar. So what are the top five reasons to postpone that mortgage burning party? Your emergency fund is on the scrawny side. Before you send another extra dollar to your mortgage company, beef up your cash reserves. Sure, you are saving more in interest than you’re earning in your bank account, but what happens if you lose your job? You can’t rip out your bathtub and sell it on eBay for grocery money. And the bank isn’t likely to loan you the money back while you’re unemployed. Likewise, if you’re still saving for retirement, putting that extra money toward your retirement savings is a smart move. You’ll be taking advantage of the power of compounding by putting the money to work for you sooner. You get an extra bonus if adding to your retirement savings garners you more of an employer match.
It’s hard to stay calm when everyone around you is in a panic and bolder yet to be investing millions in the face of a stock market collapse. That is a long remembered lesson from a few days after the Black Monday stock market crash of Oct. 19, 1987. I was interviewing B.C. entrepreneur Jim Pattison, the rags-to-riches Vancouver tycoon, who kept interrupting the interview to take calls from his broker. In each case, he was buying big chunks of stock, mostly in blue chip U.S. companies. The main Dow Jones index in New York had lurched the previous Friday and then dropped a record 23 per cent on Monday. The TSE 300 has fallen 11 per cent. With everyone bailing out he was buying. That was brass. Pattison shrugged and said deals like this didn’t come along very often — great companies with great businesses at a knock down price. “If you’ve got cash, it’s a good time to buy,” he said. It turned out he was dead on as markets quickly recovered. His buy low and sell high strategy is a pretty common investing phrase, but to apply it in the face of that sort of environment takes [...]

Houses need work. So, if you have a repair job to do — such as replacing galvanized plumbing pipes with copper pipes — who are you going to call? I faced that dilemma when the city of Toronto came to put a water meter in my basement. The installers took a look at the galvanized pipes on the wall and said they had to be replaced. I had to get the repairs done quickly. So, I called a plumber that I had found earlier at Homestars, a website that aggregates user reviews and rates contractors from 1 to 10. Volodymyr Bartkov, owner of Mister Plumber, had done other jobs for me quickly, efficiently and at a reasonable price. He didn’t disappoint this time, either, replacing the intake pipes a few hours after the installer’s visit. Hiring contractors online, even those with excellent ratings, carries a risk. How do you know they are certified and a member in good standing of a professional group? Thanks to the Ontario College of Trades, you can check on the contractors you plan to hire. The college has a public registry, which says whether or not a tradesperson is certified. When I entered Bartkov’s name [...]

Flowers are placed on a recently established burial site at Al-Barzakh Cemetery in Doswell, Va., May 10, 2013. Alleged Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev was buried earlier this week at Al-Barzakh Cemetery in Doswell, Va., about 25 miles north of downtown Richmond. Doswell is a small town along Interstate 95, best known as the location of the Kings Dominion amusement park. Some locals said they were displeased to hear the news. “They should have burned him and sent him back to his mama,” 61-year-old Wayne Pierce told the Boston Globe. “I just can’t believe this. I don’t know how they slipped him in like this.” Tsarnaev’s body was secretly removed from Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlor in Worcester, Mass., Wednesday night. The Worcester Police Department released a statement Thursday saying the body was “no longer in the city of Worcester and is now entombed.” Authorities were tight-lipped about where the body went. Before its relocation the funeral home director was unable to locate a cemetery in Massachusetts that was willing to accept the remains. Protesters outside the business advocated disposing of the corpse in a landfill. [READ: Did Media Botch the Boston Bombing?] Virginia licensed counselor Martha Mullen, 48, [...]

North American markets capped off a mostly positive week higher Friday despite slightly disappointing job figures from Statistics Canada and a continuing retreat in commodity prices. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 45.19 points to 12,589.09. The Canadian dollar lost 0.37 of a cent to 98.89 cents (U.S). On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials index jumped 35.87 points to 15,118.49, closing out its third straight week of gains. It is up one per cent for the week and 15 per cent for the year. The Nasdaq climbed 27.41 points to 3,436.58. The S&P 500 gained 7.02 points to 1,633.69. Statistics Canada reported that the unemployment rate was unchanged for April at 7.2 per cent, as the economy added 12,500 new jobs. The pickup last month helped take the sting out of March’s massive 54,500 contraction, but was not enough to put job creation on the positive side of the ledger for 2013 as a whole. Analysts had expected an addition of 15,000 jobs. But the report was better in the details, as there were 36,000 full-time workers added in April, although most of those were in the public sector. The month saw a loss of 23,600 part-time jobs. The [...]

OCHRE BEACH, MAN.—One minute, cottage owners on the southern shore of Manitoba’s Dauphin Lake were cooking on their barbecues Friday evening, admiring the views across the still-frozen ice. The next minute, that ice was rumbling up the shore like a giant bulldozer, tearing apart their decks, then slicing through some homes and tipping others on their sides. “The whole thing happened in about 10 minutes,” said Clayton Watts, deputy reeve of the Rural Municipality of Ochre River, which has declared a local state of emergency. “We had people barbecuing on their decks. They turned around to go inside to get something, they came back out and their decks were ripping apart,” he said. “It was like a freight train coming through, they say.” Watts said strong winds with gusts up to 90 km/h pushed a wall of ice up to nine metres high onto the shore at Ochre Beach, one of a couple of beaches that make up the summer community about 200 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. The ice damaged more than two dozen structures, completely destroying about a dozen of those, he said. There were no reports of injuries. Watts said people were trying to salvage what they could [...]

By W. Somerset Maugham. Directed by Morris Panych. Until Oct. 27 at the Royal George Theatre. 1-800-511-SHAW. NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ONT.—If you’re tending to be scandalized lately by the supposedly loose morals of the world in which we live, take a deep breath and plunge into the decidedly louche society of Our Betters, which had a snazzy opening Saturday afternoon at the Shaw Festival. Yes, we live in a universe of ice-cold adultery, courtesy of Ashley Madison, as well as random hookups that last no longer than the text messages one sends to arrange them, but we’ve got nothing on the characters in W. Somerset Maugham’s saga of love-for-a-price which was first produced in 1917. If you were an American girl from a rich family who didn’t quite make the varsity romantic team back home, fear not. You could go to Europe, where men of various ages, appearances and social positions would be willing to brush a little continental stardust on your drab colonial hide. Sure, after a while, the marriages show the strain, lovers and booze help ease the boredom and before long, you’re caught up in a battle between appearance vs. reality, only reality doesn’t have a chance in this [...]

The Brick is known for selling low-priced furniture in about 200 stores across Canada. Its salespeople vigorously promote a “blanket” warranty that covers everything that can go wrong for five years. But there are many holes in the blanket warranty, especially when it comes to bonded leather. This synthetic material, prone to cracking and peeling, can be less durable than genuine leather when used in sofas and chairs. The Brick refused to cover bonded leather furniture until last November, when it changed its extended warranty. Still, it turned away customers whose problems predated the change — a state of affairs that was confusing at best, infuriating at worst. After fielding a bunch of complaints, I wrote an April 27 column about a customer’s victory in small claims court. Hira Aggarwal won $ 1,500 spent on a bonded leather sofa that was peeling on the headrest after three years. I later heard from others who had been fighting with the Brick for reimbursement. Here are a few of their stories: Nancy Rondeau in Halifax bought a bonded leather sofa, chair and loveseat. She didn’t want to get genuine leather because she had a cat. “Go forward three years into the $ [...]
