Opera Atelier gets invite to Rossini Opera Festival in composer’s hometown in Italy

Opera Atelier has received another international vote of confidence in its work.

The Toronto period opera and ballet company, which specializes in the Baroque era, has been asked to create a new production of Rossini’s Ricciardo e Zoraide to open the Rossini Opera Festival’s 2018 season in Pesaro, Italy.

The opera, to be directed and choreographed by Atelier co-artistic directors Marshall Pynkoski and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, will be seen in Pesaro, Rossini’s birthplace, Aug. 11 to 20. This year’s festival commemorates the 150th anniversary of Rossini’s death.

Opera Atelier is a regular visitor to the Royal Opera House at Versailles, France, and has also staged productions at the Salzburg Festival and La Scala in Milan, Italy.

Its Ricciardo e Zoraide will star tenor Juan Diego Flórez as Ricciardo, tenor Sergey Romanovsky as Agorante and soprano Pretty Yende as Zoraide. The production will be conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti, who was recently named Young Conductor of the Year at the BBC 2016 International Opera Awards.
