A gunman killed five people and injured several others in a targeted attack at a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland on Thursday. The suspect, Jarrod Ramos, had previously sued the Capital Gazette for defamation over a story the paper wrote about him. The victims were identified as Rob Hiaasen, Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, and Gerald Fischman. The Capital Gazette put out a paper the morning after the shooting and intentionally left their opinion page empty writing, “Today, we are speechless.”

Other major headlines of the week included Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announcing his retirement, the funeral for murdered Bronx teen Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz and  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeating Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s Democratic primary.
